Very Few Of Us Are Able To Make Our Way Around The World Seeing Exciting Places, But With The Assistance Of A Fearless Television Presenter And His Team We Are All Able To See And Enjoy A Great Deal Of Our Planet

As a person who likes to leave the UK and explore other countries, but never has the finances to ever get very far, I’ve ended up doing my travelling vicariously through the adventures of others. Of course, as technology has advanced the physical world has metaphorically got smaller and it is now quite easy to get a video camera and a television presenter to nearly anywhere on the planet if you have the right connections.

Of all the various travelogue type of programmes that have been shown in recent times, I have to say that my real favourite intrepid globetrotter is Michael Palin, and I have seen his trips around the planet many times on television and DVD and never fail to enjoy them (though too much time spent looking at the TV screen has wrecked my eyes so I’m investigating Laser eye surgery).

I recall quite a lot about the very first Palin expedition – Around The World In Eighty Days – because my dad was one of the bank employees who organised most of the overseas currency details, so it was only natural that whenever the series was eventually shown, me and my family would be certain to watch it. It’s a pity that he didn’t get an actual credit really – we weren’t thinking of his name to be splashed across the sky in lights from a KEYWORD1% beam, but a few words in the end credits would have been flattering. But in any case, the whole notion of recreating Jules Verne’s epic journey sticking to the same timescale as the fictional hero of the book, Phileas Fogg and his sidekick Passepartout attracted the public’s attention, and the series was a huge success.

For the next travelogue, Michael made the extensive trip from the North Pole to the South Pole, travelling through seventeen countries, not all of which were the most comfortable places to be. The journey actually took so many months that the period of time that elapsed whilst filming witnessed the collapse of communism and the death of apartheid – though I’m absolutely certain that Mr Palin’s adventures didn’t influence either event!

Having travelled from north to south for Pole To Pole, the next journey was a circular one - a trip in which Michael and the crew set foot in all eighteen countries which border the Pacific Ocean. It is said that one of the other Python actors thought that the series should be titled ‘Palin’s Rim’ but the BBC finally settled on the much more sedate ‘Full Circle’.

Having then filmed a slightly shorter and less arduous trip whilst making a series about Ernest Hemingway, (stampeding bulls notwithstanding), the next exciting challenge was Sahara, which involved travelling through all of the countries which are located in the Sahara Desert – an area of the African continent which is the size of the USA, but with a similar number of inhabitants to Norfolk. It’s just remarkable to think of such a tiny population living in such a enormous area of land, but very understandable when you consider the inhospitable environment and extremes of temperature.

There was progression from sand to snow for the next series, Himalaya, which traversed from west to east across the spectacular Himalayan mountains, all the way from Afghanistan, via the base camp for Mount Everest, through Tibet and China to the Bay Of Bengal.

Palin’s latest series was named New Europe and in it he went to twenty countries in what used to be described as ‘Eastern Europe’, that huge area of land which was once under communist rule and which almost all ‘Westerners’ were regularly discouraged from exploring. Most of us can recall the fall of the Berlin wall which became symbolic of the political changes and the feeling of excitement that followed it and by the time of the 20th anniversary in 2009 full scale celebrations were organised including musical extravaganzas with full pyrotechnics and Laser eye beam displays, exhibitions, art projects and many others.

A little after this series was filmed, Michael headed back some of the places he had travelled to during the very first ‘Around The World’ journey twenty years before to try and track down some of the people he had encountered on his travels. The programme about that journey is well worth a look too. Of course, some of the people have passed away in those twenty years, but there were still people who remembered the previous visit. And in all honesty, those hard-working folk in Dubai and India had almost certainly changed substantially less than the European television staff who have quite likely had cosmetic nips and tucks, coloured their greying hair, bleached their teeth and had Laser eye surgery to correct deteriorating vision.

We have no way of finding out if there might be any further Palin adventures in the pipeline, but I understand that he is presently writing another book. The aging process may make such travels less appealing as time passes, but Michael should be very proud of the incredible sights and sounds that we television viewers have been able to share as a result of his sense of adventure and his desire to leave the tourist locations behind and get to know the real people of the world.
