The Harmful Effects of Divorce On Children

Children caught in the middle of a divorce experience a plethora of negative emotions brought on by the upheaval in their lives. Many think that they caused the problem and think that they can change it. They also worry, thinking that if their parents have stopped loving Each Other, maybe they'll stop loving their children, too. There are new money problems and living conditions that are new to everyone. Most children would do anything in their power to save the marriage and stop their parents from getting divorced.

Everything has changed no matter who ends up with custody. One of the parents may be forced to work when they didn't have to in the past. The non-custodial parent may not have enough money to afford a decent place to live if they're stuck paying large child support payments. Parents may be distracted, depressed, and even cry a lot, and children pick up on every bit of it. They can't possibly understand why their parents would want something that causes so much sadness.

When a child's mind is so full of pain, it's difficult for him to concentrate on school work, and grades fall. All he can think about is how things used to be compared to how they are now. Children don't understand why their parents aren't in love anymore. They think their parents should just try harder to fix the problem and restore their family. They can't be sure that you'll always love them when your love for their other parent has just ended

Lots of children see what it's like in their friends' homes and know what real marital problems are. They've seen things like Billy's dad hit his mom, and they know that one time he hit her so hard her arm was broken. They think that his dad must really hate this spouse, yet the two of them are still together. They wonder why if your marriage seemed better than their friend's parents' marriage, then why aren't the two of you still together. Most children don't understand why you just can't get help to fix the family. They may make the mistake of believing you don't care enough about them.
